The ship was not a mine sweeper. It was an attack transport. Originally built at the end of WW2 to transport UDT Teams and REcon Marines. During the Vietnam war it supported SEAL team operations.

I was part of the crew when it visited Thailand. I do not remember the exact date but must have been in 1997 - 1969

USS Weiss

This little ship was a Minesweeper with wooden halls. It would seek mines and blow them up. Wooden hall wouldn't attact magnetic mines, which would gravitate to regular ships with iron/steel halls, and then Ka-boom.
